Budesonide is a glucocorticoid, a type of steroid, which reduces inflammation and suppresses the immune system. Patients most commonly buy budesonide to reduce symptoms in conditions caused by an overactive immune system, including:

• Prevent allergic symptoms affecting the eyes, nose and sinuses from developing;
• Reduce the severity of symptoms if they do develop.

Also like inhalers, the medication is delivered directly to the areas requiring treatment, reducing the risk of side effects that may be encountered when the medication is administered via tablet.

Budesonide Tablets

Tablets are often used to treat gastrointestinal conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease, but can also be used to treat other conditions--such as respiratory ailments--when severe. Administration by tablet may produce more powerful effects than inhalers or nasal sprays, but also carries greater risk of side effects when used long-term.

When budesonide is use to treat bowel conditions, it is typically given in larger doses for 8 weeks, then smaller doses for several additional months. During this time, the medication works to:

• Reduce severity of symptoms;
• Promote remission.

If remission is successful treatment is stopped, and may be repeated if needed in the future. Though steroid treatment is not effective for all patients, those who do find it beneficial find budesonide works noticeably faster than other corticosteroids.
